PolyTag’s Plastic Recycling Traceability Programme Technology Goes Live in the UK

“Polytag has announced Marks & Spencer (M&S), a major UK retailer, is the first member of its Ecotrace Programme. The UK-based recycling technology company introduced the scheme in March this year. M&S is the first brand to make a minimum contribution of GBP 50,000 to participate in the initiative, which will allow it to track what happens to its plastic packaging at recycling centres.

Polytag’s QR codes tag and trace packaging from the moment it’s labelled to the moment it’s scanned at recycling centres. The ‘unique-every-time’ codes are applied during standard plate-printing process with fluorescent UV ink. The company says the technology delivers a low-cost tag solution, invisible to the human eye and therefore easily incorporated to existing label artwork design.”

WEFORUM – 5 Experts on Making Electronic Waste More Circular

“Demand for electronics is anticipated to balloon in the coming decades, owing to both the digital and net-zero transformations. E-waste is already the fastest growing waste category globally, yet only 17% was formally collected and recycled in 2022, with gaping regional disparities. The rest, dumped in landfills or burned in unsanitary conditions, directly contributes to environmental pollution, human health hazards and climate change, through emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and other noxious GHGs due to improper disassembly, incineration, or storage in landfill.

In contrast, properly recycled e-waste offers an energy efficient source of raw materials, including copper, lithium, nickel and gold, which are now vital for the energy transition. Similarly, refurbished, reused and remanufactured electronics can reduce virgin material extraction and emissions from production. Coordinated global action to extend the lifecycle and improve end-of-life treatment of electronics is thus imperative for both the environment and the economy.”

California Sues Exxon Mobil for Misleading the Public on Recycling Claims

“California has filed a first-of-its-kind lawsuit against ExxonMobil, alleging that the company has spent decades misleading the public about the efficacy of plastic recycling. The lawsuit alleges that ExxonMobil has known for decades that recycling plastics was technically and economically challenging and would do little to stem the enormous volume of plastic waste that ends up in the environment. 6 Nature Positive Circular Economy Strategies to Transform Europe’s Built Environment

“With over 70 national strategies and roadmaps adopted worldwide as well as widespread corporate uptake, the circular economy has established itself as the most credible and economically attractive proposition to supplant business as usual. Yet its benefits are so far mostly understood to lie in materials management, with little attention paid to the climate and nature-positive impacts the framework can generate. The case now needs to be made for circularity’s regenerative potential, and the contribution it can make to nature’s health – bearing in mind that more than half of the world’s GDP relies on the natural world.”
