Master Data Management for Total Process Control

  Pritesh Pattni

Using master data efficiently provides a single reference where all ‘objects’ are agreed on and shared across the company, meaning that all data can be linked together in one master file.

Master data management (MDM) is a technology-enabled discipline in which business and IT work together to ensure the uniformity, accuracy, stewardship, semantic consistency and accountability of the enterprise’s official shared master data assets. Master data is the consistent and uniform set of identifiers and extended attributes that describes the core entities of the enterprise including customers, prospects, citizens, suppliers, sites, hierarchies and chart of accounts.

Data Management with Waste and Recycling One software solutions

ISB Global has developed integrated software platforms that suit the requirements of organisations operating in waste logistics and recycling materials sectors, worldwide: Waste & Recycling One.

Visit the Waste and Recycling One process flow web page that details the entire business process for a waste logistics and recycling materials operation from Enquiry to Banking.

Process Control

Master data is a key part of the implementation, especially when migrating from multiple interfaced applications to integrated software platforms, SAP Waste & Recycling One.

Master data objects are the fundamental items that control and govern all transactions in the business process. They need to be precise and nurtured for transactional data to be managed accurately throughout the enquiry to banking process in SAP Waste & Recycling One.

The SAP Waste & Recycling One includes a range of data objects in customer, supplier, orders, materials, pricing matrices, stocked and non-stocked items, assets, vehicles, account, project, cost centre and tax codes and posting distribution rules to ensure effective master data management is possible.

Order Control

The associated CRM, enquiry, draft and quote tasks compile and move the waste logistics order through the different stages of the enquiry to banking process. The master data relationship to transactional (and reference) data governs, controls and can semi or fully automate the process, according to configuration settings in SAP, Waste & Recycling One.

Automatically Generate Reports

Once the order is compiled and planned using master data components, it can be carried out according to the instructions guided by the master data. For example, the order type is scheduled to take place on customer request. Corresponding material data in the order, governs waste transfer reporting. Instructs an internal or subcontractor vehicle asset, and notification of a manifest or acceptance process, for quality analysis or laboratory sampling, in turn governing recycling or disposal route.

Control Bi-Modal Interaction

As a true Bi-Modal operation, SAP Waste & Recycling One master data governs the scheduled order for logistics execution in SmartWorld, RoutiLogix, a flexible logistics, planning, scheduling and optimisation app.

The DriviLogix UX allows the vehicle teams to interact quickly with the integrated master (transaction and reference) data, capturing additional information against the planned order’s master data. In turn easily managing variance against planned weights and difference in costs, in real time against order, shift, route and sequence, automatically from onboard weighing equipment, if (IoT) connected.

Regulate Weight, Quality & Costs

The weights back from third party and subcontractor sites are uploaded to portal or directly, easily, automatically and matched against planned data. Reporting on any variance in costs, helping to manage accurate payments for associated disposal and recycling activities. The same process applies to scales and bridges at your own plants, confirming weights and outbound charges.

Command Customer & Supplier Price

Once the logistics order is confirmed and completed against planned master data and any variance managed. Master data management also governs the sales order charging elements for the service provided (from customer pricing master data) and any payments due from third party haulage or recycling costs based on the materials and weights (from supplier pricing master data).

 Automated Journal Posting

As these processes have been planned, executed and confirmed correct, they can be automated to create, raise and post journals to predefined general ledger account master data. Including cost, project, departmental and budgetary analysis. Ensuring integrated cost and profit data used in accounts is correct – it has been planned and if necessary corrected in operations if deemed out of tolerance.

Interface vs. Integration

Studies and value engineering exercises on implementations conducted to date, show the use of master data to maintain and control transactions has resulted in a significant increase in financial and operational business processes and benefits. Profitability, accuracy, speed and administration timing has an average uplift of >65% in comparison to separate software applications, interfaced and not integrated.
